So you want to remodel your kitchen. What ideas do you have in mind? While figuring out the best possible plans and choices for your kitchen, are you giving any importance to the environment? We suggest that you should do this in an eco friendly manner.
Most of the kitchen renovations that we have seen involve breaking down the walls or detaching the cabinet to form an open space kitchen. Often, these materials end up in dumpsters and landfills and just add to more waste. If you take this into account beforehand, you can prevent this and decrease the amount that is sent to the landfills every year. We will first talk about how this can be done, and then we will proceed onto some more green ideas.
Taking down the cabinets
While taking down cabinets, you should not use a sledgehammer. Instead, try to remove the whole structure. Hiring a contractor for the job? Make sure they follow this tip. This will allow you to reuse the cabinets for a number of purposes. For starters, you can reuse them for storage means or you can even donate them to charity. Want to generate money? Try to sell them on Craigslist or another similar site.
Removing the walls
What about the walls? You can give the sheetrock away to a recycling company that is near you. Just make sure that the walls do not contain any nails, traces of asbestos, lead paint or any other foreign objects. As for the plaster from the walls, not many recycling companies will accept this. Still there are some ways in which you can reuse this. Crush the plaster and add it to the soil. Or you could add it back to another wall in your house, and paint it over in a creative manner.
Deciding what you want in your new kitchen
Have you figured out materials for your new kitchen? Cork and bamboo are great choices for your new floor if you want to be green. What about the countertops? Recycled glass is a good choice.
Install energy efficient appliances
You just cannot miss out on this if you want to be green. Your kitchen should have appliances that are energy efficient.
Act on our advice, and you will renovate your kitchen, while protecting the beloved environment in which you live.
