How much hot water do you waste everyday when you turn on that tap? Ever wondered about it? According to the Environmental Protection Agency or the EPA, nearly 100 gallons of water is wasted on a daily basis, and of this, nearly 20% is heated. Is there an upside to this? Yes, you can use this water to produce energy.
A wastewater company has actually been able to achieve this. They prevent water from flowing down the drain and instead, convert it into energy. This company has already developed a stream of clients and they are all eager to get this water reuse system installed on their properties.
So how can we produce energy from hot water? In the simplest of terms, heat is extracted from wastewater and is then transferred into uncontaminated fresh water; this process is referred to as sewage heat recover. When wastewater is being transferred down the drain, a system comprising of filters, pipes, heat pumps and exchangers, takes in the heat from the water and then converts it into energy. This is then pumped to all areas where it is required including cooling the wastewater system.
The president of the company stated that this process is a really great choice for producing energy because it possesses no harm to the environment or man. He added that the system does not emit energy; instead, it just reuses it again and again in a cyclic manner.
The fact that energy is continuously produced ensures that you have warm water throughout. What does this mean? You got it, no more cold showers.
Are there other benefits of this wastewater system other than the fact that it is renewable? If you install the system, you can enjoy significant savings in energy. A building started using this system about a year ago, and since then, has saved energy by a significant amount. If you only consider the amount that is used for producing hot water, savings have been as much 75.2%. This is not much of a surprise when you factor in the fact that the efficiency of the system is 100%. What about pollution? Stats claim that this system has decreased the emission of green houses by nearly 150 tons annually.
Obviously, you will have to invest an amount when you get this system. But for every dollar that you put into it, you can save nearly $6.
