I’m sure you have seen those large waste receptacles sitting in front of homes that are undergoing a renovation – especially since Hurricane Sandy. They are not like the typical dumpster that you see sitting behind restaurants and in alleys – these almost resemble a box car. These dumpsters are more for rubbish which is considered as waste material and not food waste. Because of its rate of decomposition, rubbish is stored in a separate part of a landfill.
Typically, a dumpster rental company – like Express Recycling and Sanitation – will bring the container to your home and sit it by the curb or in a driveway. Once you have used all the space in the container by filling it with scrap material and rubbish, you call the company that you rented the dumpster from and they come and pick it up.
When should you rent a dumpster?
There are many situations that call for renting a dumpster however, here are a few that we see most often:
If you are one of those people – a do it yourself person – and you’re planning a project that will entail ripping out siding, walls, windows, flooring, roofing etc., then dumpster rental should be part of your plan. This is the most efficient way of containing and hauling away the rubbish that you’re going to need to dispose of – it has to go somewhere!
Another great candidate for a dumpster is for large yard projects where you will be removing play equipment, shrubs, trees and sod. These types of materials cannot be hauled away by a truck at a cost effective price and they cannot go into city trash containers.
If you’re preparing to move out of a house then you will need to do some serious hauling of items that are too big for a normal trash haul. This includes: rugs, bookshelves, exercise equipment, dressers, tables, sofas etc. Renting a dumpster in this situation makes total sense since there is nowhere else to put all that rubbish even though you might not fill the whole thing.
Things to keep in mind:
If you’re not adequately prepared for the arrival, the nature of these containers can cause some issues.
Before its arrival, make sure you know where you want the container to go and that your street or driveway is cleared. If you place it too far from your house, you’re going to have to walk everything that you’re hauling a long distance.
If it will take up your parking space, you will need to make arrangements to park away from your house.
Keep in mind that some of these containers can be pretty tall. If you’re not a tall person, you will have trouble lifting the rubbish into the container. All of our dumpsters have a back door which provides for access and easy loading. You can walk or wheelbarrow debris directly inside the dumpster.
