Rather than using our garages for cars, most of the time, we end up using them for storage – after all – storage rooms are expensive! However, eventually the junk wins out and you can’t even open the garage door. At some point – maybe when the kids move out – you’re going to want your garage back. Make sure you’re properly prepared when that day comes. It’s time to sort out that messy garage!
So where do you begin?
Take it one side at a time. If you actually have cars in the garage, move them out and start moving everything from one side to the other – including the things you’re going to get rid of.
Everything moved? Start cleaning. Use a broom to clean walls, window panes, corners of the ceilings, top of the workbench and the floor. Sweep everything out onto the driveway – this will leave you with a clean, empty side of the garage.
Move items to the clean side. This is where the organization process takes place – take all the items that will go on the “clean” side of the garage and put them in the place where you want them to stay permanently: Items that you originally moved from that side and anything that was in the wrong place to begin with.
Look around and see what’s left on the “dirty” side. This is where you should see items that you want to get rid of as well as the things you want to keep and will eventually find their proper place on this side of the garage. You can take all of the throwaways and temporarily move them to the driveway and eventually into the dumpster you have rented from Express Recycling and Sanitation! Move all the “keepers” to the clean side of the garage and clean out the dirty side. Now you can organize this side of the garage.
Do you have a workbench? Get it organized! Your garage is all clean but you still have that workbench you’ve needed to organize. Put all the tools and equipment in their proper places and try to group like with like. You can use empty salsa or baby food jars to store all those loose nails, screws and smaller items.
Look what you accomplished! No more clutter, no more dirt, no more trash! Your things are organized in easy to find places – your tools are in the right place and best of all – you can move your car BACK into the garage!

You made an interesting point when you talked about how dumpsters are ideal for removing clutter from a garage or basement. If you are using a rental dumpster, it would probably make sure that you have it placed in the right location. Having the dumpster placed on your driveway would probably be better than in the street.
The dumpster can work wonders. Thanks for sharing this blog about how the dumpster sorts out all the mess in the garage.
It’s great to know that dumpsters are best for construction and cleaning projects in the basement or garage. Since I plan to get my garage renovated, I should probably include a dumpster rental in my budget. I still have one month to save up enough budget for the project, so I hope that this would be enough to get all the services I would need.
My garage is full of junk, and I’m not sure how to get rid of it all. It makes sense that getting a dumpster would be a good idea! That seems like a great way to be able to get rid of plenty of junk at once.
We appreciate your advice to sweep everything out into the driveway so you may have a clear, empty side of the garage. I wish to move my sister into a new home. I’ll advise her to clean the garage and make a call to the dumpster rental service.
That makes sense that using a broom to push everything to the dumpster. My wife and I are going through a remodel and need to get rid of debris. We’ll have to consider renting out a dumpster.
Thanks so much for the advice to empty the room to clean and then slowly organize it as a way to divide what to keep and what to dump. My mom has a lot of old storage things that we don’t need anymore so we’ve been looking to clean it all out. We’ll have to look into finding a dumpster rental place we can call so we can put everything broken in there and not have to worry about it.
