With the backing of the Environmental Industry Associations, Monday June 17th has been designated as National Garbage Man Day!
The new day allows people to appreciate those who devote their lives to picking up waste, stated the trade group that represents private waste and recycling companies.
In a statement by Sharon H. Kneiss, EIA’s CEO, she stated, “The drivers and sanitation workers manning the front lines of waste and recycling pickup routes are more than just valued employees. They are the industry’s ambassadors for safety, service and environmental stewardship. They epitomize our motto of serving as environmentalists every day, so it is most appropriate to set aside a national day of recognition in their honor.”
This is the brainchild of John Arwood, CEO of EIA member company Arwood Waste Inc. of Jacksonville, Florida.
Kneiss also stated “Their (sanitation workers) important work goes largely unrecognized. Take some time to thank them personally.”
Backing for the day has grown in recent weeks and Arwood states “It’s just unbelievable to me how many government officials are taking a stand in honoring this day. I have been overwhelmed with an array of different people contacting me.”
How can you show your appreciation? Arwood stated that simply taking the time to appreciate the sanitation workers in your area by giving them a card or taking time to thank them for their hard work will go a long way. “Garbage men are looked down upon,” he said. “You usually see a garbage man or garbage truck and you’re like, ‘Get out of the road.’ You’re aggravated with them. They’re there every week. They’re doing a service for the community. To me, they should be recognized as much as a policeman, a fireman or any other public servant that’s exposed out there in the streets.”
